Abbeyfield in Australia
Abbeyfield operates on a national and a local level. The national body, Abbeyfield Australia Ltd, is a company limited by guarantee. It is governed by a Board of Directors who are all volunteers.
Abbeyfield Australia provides a nation wide co-ordinating role including:
- Negotiating with governments;
- Establishing policies and standards;
- Carrying out research;
- Managing industrial relations issues
- Providing advice and support for local Abbeyfield societies;
- Providing training for Abbeyfield housekeepers;
- Developing new projects.
At the local level
The volunteer, community based Abbeyfield societies are all incorporated associations. Each local society is responsible for all the stages of the development of an Abbeyfield house, from initial proposals to building completion.
The members contribute a wide range of skills and knowledge to each house and take on a wide range of tasks including:
- Locating land for the house;
- Contributing to the planning process;
- Oversighting the construction or renovation of the building;
- Raising funds for the house.
More importantly, they carry out the ongoing management of the houses, on a day-to-day basis, providing administrative rigour and resident support in accord with the overall philosophy of the organization.
The whole organisation
Our organisation is linked by management and/or affiliation agreements which ensure that standards are maintained across the organization and that the organization is accountable both internally and externally.
The focus of Abbeyfield’s organizational structure is the well being of the residents living in Abbeyfield houses and hostels across Australia.
